Enter the hilarious world of ten-year-old Kenny and his family, the Weird Watsons of Flint, Michigan. There's Momma, Dad, little sister Joetta, and brother Byron, who's thirteen and an 'official juvenile delinquent.'
When Byron gets to be too much trouble, they head South to Birmingham to visit Grandma, the one person who can shape him up. And they'll be in Birmingham during one of the darkest moments in America's history.
'Every so often a book becomes a modern classic almost as soon as it arrives on bookshelves. That happened in the mid-'90s when Christopher Paul Curtis released his first book, The Watsons Go to Birmingham--1963.' --NPR
'One of the best novels EVER.' --Jacqueline Woodson, Newbery Honor and National Book Award–winning author of Brown Girl Dreaming

Somehow I missed the fact that this book might have been intended for kids or young adults. I am glad that I didn't know because I probably would have passed on this book if I had. I don't review books often, so it's got to be really good or bad for me to take the time. This one....really good. Everything: story, narrator, history, emotion, this book has it all. It deals with complex situations often with humor and always through the eyes of a little 10 year old kid. Please read this book. You will not be sorry.

It is a very clever book. My daughter (11 years) and I found ourselves laughing out loud. I also like the fact that it provided insight for her into that period of our history. Highly recommend.
